Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1889 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Sayyār narrated to me; Jaʿfar narrated to us; Mālik ibn Dīnār narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “No servant ever delivers a khuṭbah (sermon) without Allah—exalted is He—asking him about it: ‘What did you intend by it?’”

Jaʿfar said: Whenever Mālik related this hadith to us he would weep until he could no longer continue, then he would say, “They suppose that my eyes take comfort in my own words, while I know that Allah will question me on the Day of Resurrection: ‘What did you mean by them?’”
