Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1879 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us, ʿAli ibn Muslim narrated to us, Sayyār narrated to us; ʿUthmān Abū Ibrāhīm al-Ḥimyārī, who used to sit with Mālik ibn Dīnār, narrated: I heard Mālik ibn Dīnār say to one of his companions, “I have a craving for a soft loaf topped with sour milk.” The man went off and brought it. The milk was poured over the bread, and Mālik kept turning it over, inspecting it. Then he said, “I have desired you for forty years, and all that time I have bested you; today you seek to best me. Away from me!” And he refused to eat it. }
