- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us—my father narrated to us—Yahyā ibn Ghaylān narrated to us—Rishdīn narrated to us—Yūnus narrated to me—from Ibn Shihāb, who reported that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—may Allah be pleased with him—said: “This Qur’an is the Word of Allah; therefore, set it in its proper place and do not pursue your own whims regarding it.”
١٩١ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ غَيْلَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا رِشْدِينُ، حَدَّثَنِي يُونُسُ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: «إِنَّ هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ كَلَامُ اللَّهِ – Exalté soit-Il –، فَضَعُوهُ عَلَى مَوَاضِعِهِ، وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا فِيهِ أَهْوَاءَكُمْ»
