Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1874 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; ʿAlī narrated to us; Siyyar narrated to us; Jaʿfar narrated to us; Mālik narrated to us; he said: Moses, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, sent Bilʿām ibn Bāʿūrāʾ to the king of Midian, inviting him to Allah—exalted is He. Bilʿām’s supplications were answered, and he was one of the scholars of the Children of Israel. Moses (upon him be peace) would place him at the forefront in times of hardship: whenever a calamity befell them, Bilʿām would supplicate and Moses would say “āmīn.” Mālik said: The king kept granting him estates and gifts, again and again, until Bilʿām abandoned his faith and followed the king’s religion. Thereupon Allah—exalted is He—revealed: “And recite to them the story of the one to whom We gave Our signs, but he detached himself from them…” (al-Aʿrāf 7:175), to the end of the verse.
