Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1841 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Rawḥ narrated to us; Bistām ibn Muslim narrated to us. He said: I heard Abū al-Tayyāḥ say: I heard Abū al-Sawwār al-ʿAdawī reciting the verse: “And every human being We have fastened his fate to his neck, and on the Day of Resurrection We shall bring forth for him a record that he will find spread open” (al-Isrāʾ 17:13). Then he remarked: “There are two unfoldings and one folding. Whatever you, O child of Adam, have committed is your open scroll—fill it with whatever you wish. When you die it is folded up, and when you are resurrected it is spread out again: ‘Read your book; today your own self suffices as a reckoner against you’ (al-Isrāʾ 17:14).”
