- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us—my father narrated to us—Hāshim narrated to us—Ṣāliḥ narrated to us—from Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī, from Abū al-Mujālad, who said:
“When the punishment descended upon the people of Jonah, peace be upon him, it hovered over their heads like patches of the darkest night. The men of reason among them went to an elderly man, the last of their scholars, and said, ‘You see the calamity that has befallen us. Teach us a supplication with which we may call upon Allah, that perhaps Allah will lift His punishment from us.’
He replied, ‘Say: O Ever-Living One when none else is living; O Ever-Living One who gives life to the dead; O Ever-Living One, there is no god but You.’
He (Abū al-Mujālad) said: ‘So Allah lifted the punishment from them.’
