1818 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said, “I found this in my father’s book. Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to me; a man from Basra related the following:
Al-Hasan had a room whose open door served as his permission; whenever any of his companions came and found the door open, he would enter. One day a man arrived, saw the door standing open, and walked in. Not finding al-Hasan inside, he noticed a basket under the bed, pulled it toward himself, discovered food in it, and began to eat.
Al-Hasan returned from an inner chamber, and when he saw what the man was doing he stood watching him; then his eyes filled with tears and he started to weep. The man asked, “What makes you weep, Abū Saʿīd?” He replied, “You have reminded me of the noble conduct of people who have passed away.”
