- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us—my father narrated to us—ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated to us—from Sufyān, from Manṣūr, from Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd—concerning the verse, “He cried out in the darknesses” (al-Anbiyāʾ 21:87). He said: “Allah instructed the whale not to harm him in bone or flesh. Then another whale swallowed him. Thus, ‘He cried out in the darknesses’ refers to the darkness inside the first whale, the darkness inside the second whale, and the darkness of the sea.”
