1799 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said, “I read this report to my father.” ʿAffan narrated to us; Saʿid ibn Zayd narrated to us; Maʿmar ibn Rashid narrated to us, saying: al-Zuhri said, “ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz informed me, on the authority of his father, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked, ‘Which aspect of the religion is best?’ He replied, ‘al-ḥanīfiyyah al-samḥah—the upright and easygoing path.’”
