Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1755 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿUbayd Allah ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salama informed us, from Ḥumayd, from Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allah, who said:

“Indeed, Allah makes His servant drink the cup of bitterness so that He may set right the servant’s ultimate outcome. Have you not seen a woman who forces her child to swallow ṣabr (bitter aloes)—or, he said, ḥaḍaḍ (a harsh purgative)—seeking thereby the child’s health?”
