Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1741 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: My father narrated to me; he said: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us; he said: Hisham—meaning al-Dustuwāʾī—narrated to us, from Jaʿfar—meaning the Owner of al-Anmāṭ—from Abu al-ʿĀliyah, who said:

"A time will come upon the people when their hearts are laid waste of the Quran, and they will taste none of its sweetness or delight. When they fall short of what they have been commanded, they say, ‘Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful,’ and when they commit what they have been forbidden, they say, ‘He will forgive us; after all, we have not associated anything with Allah.’ Their entire affair is wishful thinking with no truthfulness in it. They wear the skins of sheep over hearts that are like those of wolves; the best of them in religion is the one who flatters."
