Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1735 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Abu Saʿid, the client of Banu Hashim, narrated to us; Abu Yaʿqub—meaning Ishaq ibn ʿUthman al-Kilabi—narrated to us; Rajaʾ ibn Haywah related to me, saying:

“ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz used to be one of the most fragrant of men, the best dressed, and the most proud in his stride. Yet when he was appointed caliph, all his clothes together were appraised at twelve dirhams—garments from Egypt: his kummiyah (loose-sleeved robe), turban, shirt, qabāʾ (long over-robe), qurtuq (jacket), leather socks, and cloak.”
