1733 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Harun narrated to us; Damrah narrated to us. Hafs ibn ʿUmar reported: When ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz died, his father began to praise him. Maslamah said to him, “O Commander of the Believers, had he lived, would you have appointed him as your successor?” He replied, “No.” Maslamah asked, “Why not, when you speak of him with such praise?” He said, “I fear that his affair may have been made to look attractive in my eyes in the way a parent’s view of his own child is beautified.”
