1731 – ʿAbdullah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Ismaʿil ibn Ibrahim ibn Ziyad ibn Abi Hassan narrated to us, stating that he was present when ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz buried his son ʿAbd al-Malik. He said:
When he had interred him, smoothed the earth over him, leveled the grave so that it was flush with the ground, and they had set two pieces of olive-wood beside him—one at his head and the other at his feet—the grave was positioned between him and the qiblah. ʿUmar then stood upright while the people gathered around him and said:
“May Allah show you mercy, my son; you were truly dutiful to your father. By Allah, from the moment Allah granted you to me I have been delighted with you, and, by Allah, I have never felt more intensely affected by anyone nor more hopeful of Allah’s favor on your account than I am now that I have placed you in this abode to which Allah has brought you. So may Allah have mercy on you, forgive your sins, and reward you according to the best of your deeds. May He also show mercy to everyone—present or absent—who intercedes for you with goodness. We are pleased with Allah’s decree and we submit to His command. All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds.”
He then departed.
