1728 – ʿAbdullah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Marwān ibn Shujāʿ, Abū ʿAmr, narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAblah al-ʿUqaylī, a resident of Jerusalem, related:
ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz once became extremely angry with a certain man. He sent for him, and the man was brought in. ʿUmar had him stripped and stretched out with ropes, then called for the whips. When we were sure he was about to strike him, he said, “Let him go. He would never have been brought before me were it not that I am angered by his wrongdoing.” He then recited: “Those who suppress their anger and pardon people—and Allah loves the doers of good” (Āl ʿImrān 3:134).
