1721 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Abu Salih al-Hakam ibn Musa narrated to me; Damrah narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn al-Khattab, who said:
ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn ʿUmar related: Rajāʾ ibn Ḥaywah once said to me, “I have never seen anyone with a sounder intellect than your father.” He went on to say:
I stayed up with him one night when the lamp began to dim, so he said to me, “O Rajāʾ, the lamp is going out.” A young servant was sleeping beside us, so I asked, “Shall I wake the servant?” He replied, “He has already fallen asleep.” I then said, “Shall I get up and fix it myself?” He answered, “It is not part of a man’s muruʾah (dignified self-respect) to make use of his guest.”
He thereupon removed his headdress, went to the lamp, took out the wick, produced a small flask, opened it, and poured some of its oil into the lamp. Then he returned and said, “I rose as ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz, and I have come back as ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz.”
