1713 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allah ibn Muʿādh al-ʿAnbarī told me; my father told me; Murrah told me, from Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd ibn ʿUtbah ibn Abī Sufyān. Walīd ibn Hishām ibn Abī al-Walīd ibn ʿUqbah ibn Abī Muʿīṭ narrated to us:
“We halted in a certain land, and a man said, ‘Do you not hear what this monk is saying? He claims that Sulaymān, the Commander of the Believers, has died.’ I asked, ‘Who was appointed after him?’ He replied, ‘The scarred one, ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.’
When we later reached Syria, we found the matter exactly as he had said. In the fourth year we stopped again at that same station, and that man went to the monk and said, ‘Monk, the report you gave us proved to be exactly as you said.’ He replied, ‘By Allah, ʿUmar has been given poison.’
I went to ʿUmar and informed him. He said, ‘By Allah, if I wished I could tell you the very hour I was made to drink it.’ I said, ‘Will you not seek treatment for yourself?’ He answered, ‘I have no desire for my remedy to be nothing more than scratching my ear.’”}
