1710 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said, ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿUmar al-Qawārīrī narrated to me; he said, Zāʾidah ibn Abī al-Ruqād narrated to us; he said, ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said, Ibn al-ʿAyzār told me:

ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz once addressed us in Syria from a pulpit made of clay. He praised Allah—exalted is He—and extolled Him, then delivered three brief statements, saying:

“O people! Set right your inner selves and your outward affairs will be set right. Work for your Hereafter, and your worldly needs will be taken care of. And know that any man who has no father between himself and Adam is inevitably bound to die. And peace be upon you.”
