1706 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Suwayd ibn Saʿīd al-Harawī told me; Muḥammad ibn Marwān narrated to us, from Hishām ibn Ḥassān, who said:
Fatimah bint ʿAbd al-Malik sent for Rajāʾ ibn Ḥaywah and said, “The Commander of the Believers is doing something that, as I see it, his religion does not allow.”
He asked, “What is it?”
She replied, “Since the day he assumed the caliphate he has not come near me at all.”
Rajāʾ then went in to ʿUmar and said, “O Commander of the Believers, you are doing something that, in my view, your religion does not permit.”
Alarmed, ʿUmar exclaimed, “Woe to you, Rajāʾ! What is it?”
He answered, “O Commander of the Believers, your family have a right over you.”
At that, tears streamed from ʿUmar’s eyes and he said, “Rajāʾ, how can a man feel any ease when the affairs of the Muslims and of the covenanted peoples have been placed around his neck, and Allah—exalted is He—will question him about them on the Day of Resurrection?”
