1703 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; al-Hasan narrated to me, from Ḍamrah, from Rajaʾ ibn Abi Salamah, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAwn al-Qāriʾ, who said:
ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz once halted at a monastery in Persian lands. The head of the monastery brought a tray filled with the season’s first fruit and set it before him, while al-Walid ibn Hisham and al-Husayn ibn Rustum were present.
Al-Walid ibn Hisham said, “Eat, O Commander of the Believers, and pay him double its price.”
Al-Husayn ibn Rustum added, “Eat it, O Commander of the Believers, for one better than you has eaten such fruit.”
ʿUmar replied, “Shame on you, Ibn Rustum! At that time it was a gift; today it is a bribe.” He then refused to eat and returned the fruit.
