175 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Abū Saʿīd narrated to us; Abū ʿAwānah narrated to us; ʿUmar—meaning Ibn Abī Salamah—narrated to us, from his father, who heard him say:

The Messenger of Allah—may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him—set out with a group of his Companions to visit Abū al-Haytham ibn al-Tayyihān, whose name was Mālik ibn al-Tayyihān. He entered and greeted his wife, asking, “Where is Abū al-Haytham?” She replied, “He has gone to fetch us fresh water.” While they were still there he returned, and he said to his wife, “Woe to you! Have you prepared anything for the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace?” She answered, “No.” He said, “Get up!”

She took some of their barley and ground it, while he went to his flock and slaughtered a sheep for them. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “Do not slaughter one that is giving milk.” He then cooked it for them, set the food before them, and they ate. After that he picked up a waterskin—or a bucket—drank from it, and so did those with him. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then said, “You will surely be questioned about this drink.”
