Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1698 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Abu Hafs ʿAmru ibn ʿAli related to me; Abu Qutaybah narrated to us; a client of Quraysh told me, saying: I heard Rajaʾ ibn Haywah say:

“I spent a night in the company of ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz. The lamp ran out of oil, so I said, ‘O Amīr al-Muʾminīn (Commander of the Faithful), if only you would instruct the servant to come and refill the lamp with oil.’ He replied, ‘He has been laboring all day, and has only just begun his sleep.’ I said, ‘Shall I then get up and pour some oil into the lamp myself?’ He said, ‘No.’ Then he himself rose, poured oil into the lamp, and sat back down. He then remarked, ‘I stood up as ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz, and I returned as ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz, O Rajaʾ. It is not in keeping with a man’s murūʾah (honorable character) to make use of his guest as a servant.’”
