1696 – Sufyan ibn Wakiʿ narrated to us; Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from ʿUmar ibn Dharr, who said:
A mawla of ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz, upon returning from Sulayman’s funeral, said to him, “Why do I see you so distressed?” He replied, “It is for a case like his that sorrow is felt. There is not a single member of the umma of Muhammad ﷺ in the East or the West of the earth but that I wish to discharge his due, without his having to write to me about it or come demanding it from me.” (He meant ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz.)
