Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1693 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Mansur ibn Bashir narrated to me; Ismaʿil ibn ʿAyyash narrated, from Abu Ishaq, from Ibrahim ibn ʿUqbah, from ʿAtaʾ, the freedman of Umm Bakrah al-Aslamiyyah, from Habib ibn Hind al-Aslami, who said:

Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib said to me while we were at ʿArafah, “The caliphs are only three.”

I asked, “Who are the caliphs?”

He replied, “Abu Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUmar.”

I said, “We know Abu Bakr and ʿUmar, but which ʿUmar do you mean?”

He answered, “If you live, you will come to know; and if you die, he will be after your time.”
