1690 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; al-Hasan ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz al-Misri narrated to me; Abu Hafs ⦗237⦘ ʿUmar ibn Abi Salamah narrated to me; Abu ʿAbd al-Halīm ibn ʿAbdah narrated to us. He said: Al-Hasan—my maternal grandfather—reported:

I was sitting in the gathering of Ayyub when he remarked, “So-and-so had a vision.” Once he mentioned his name, the people understood that he had seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seated between Abu Bakr and ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him. Then ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz arrived and leaned toward him on his right, intending to sit between him and Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr exclaimed, “O Messenger of Allah, I never imagined you would seat anyone between me and yourself.” The Prophet gestured toward ʿUmar, indicating that he should sit between the two of them. ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) then said exactly what Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) had said, whereupon the Prophet seated him directly in front of him.
