1674 – Al-Zuhri’s report from ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz: ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muhammad ibn ʿAwn al-Taʾi narrated to me; Abu al-Yaman narrated to us; Shuʿayb informed us, from al-Zuhri, who said: ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz told me, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, “Which aspect of the religion is best?” He replied, “al-ḥanīfiyyah al-samḥah (upright, easy-going monotheism).”
