1660 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Bakr—meaning al-Muzani—narrated to us, from al-Hasan, who said:

“This al-ḥaqq (the truth) has wearied people and has stood between them and their shahawāt (desires). Only those who recognize its merit and hope for its outcome remain patient with this al-ḥaqq.

Among mankind there are some who recite the Qur’an, yet it does not restrain them from wrongdoing; the people who are most entitled to this Qur’an are those who follow it through their deeds, even if they do not recite it.

You may know people while they are in ʿāfiyah (well-being), but when balāʾ (affliction) descends, they revert to their true selves: the believer returns to his faith, and the hypocrite to his hypocrisy.”
