1654 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us; Abū al-Ashhab narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan, regarding the Almighty’s words, “He has always been Forgiving toward those who constantly turn back” (Surah al-Isrāʾ, 17:25). He said, “The awwāb is the one who returns to Allah with both his heart and his deeds.
Concerning the verse, “They give whatever they give while their hearts tremble” (Surah al-Muʾminūn, 23:60), he said, “They carried out every righteous deed they could, yet feared that these deeds might still not deliver them from Allah’s punishment.”
On the verse, “When the ignorant address them, they say, ‘Peace’” (Surah al-Furqān, 25:63), he said, “They are forbearing; even when others behave ignorantly toward them, they do not respond with ignorance. This describes their daytime conduct when they mingle among the people.
As for the words, ‘And those who pass the night before their Lord, prostrating and standing’ (25:64), this depicts their night, when they are alone with their Lord, exalted is He.
Regarding the verse, ‘Indeed, its punishment is inescapable’ (25:65), he said, ‘They realized that every creditor will eventually part from his debtor—except for the creditor of Hellfire.’”
