1650 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; al-Hakam ibn Musa narrated to us; Damrah narrated to us, from Ibn Shawdhab, who said:
Al-Hasan, Muʿawiya ibn Qurrah and a number of their peers once assembled and began discussing the question, “Which deeds are the most excellent?” Muʿawiya spoke up—his view differed from theirs—and al-Hasan said, “No deed performed after striving in Allah’s path is superior to the nashiʾat al-layl (the night vigil).” Muʿawiya replied, “Rather, it is waraʿ (scrupulous self-restraint).” Al-Hasan became upset and then said, “That can only be attained through waraʿ.”
