1640 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Yunus narrated to us; Salih narrated to us, from Khulayد, from Salih b. Hassan, who said: “Al-Hasan was fasting one evening, and at the time for him to break the fast we brought him some food. When it was set in front of him—⦗231⦘ the following verse came to his mind: ‘Indeed, with Us are shackles and a blazing Fire, and food that chokes, and a painful punishment’ (Al-Muzzammil 73:13)—his hand recoiled from the dish. He said, ‘Remove it,’ so we removed it.
That night he went to bed and awoke still fasting. When he sought to break his fast the next evening, he remembered the same verse and did the very same thing.
On the third day his son went to Thabit al-Bunani, Yahya al-Bakkaʾ, and a group of al-Hasan’s companions and said, ‘Come to my father quickly, for he has not tasted food for three days. Each time we bring it near him he recalls this verse: ‘Indeed, with Us are shackles and a blazing Fire’ (Al-Muzzammil 73:12), and then he recites it.’ They came to him and continued with him until they finally made him drink a draught of sawiq (barley gruel).”
