1616 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Rawḥ narrated to us, from Qurrat ibn Khalid, who said: I heard al-Hasan, commenting on His—Exalted is He—statement, “And I swear by the self-reproaching soul” (al-Qiyamah 75:2), say: “Indeed, you never see the believer except that he is blaming his own soul. He asks, ‘What did I intend by that word?’ ‘What did I intend by that morsel of food?’ ‘What did I intend by the thought that crossed my mind?’—you always find him taking himself to task. As for the wicked person, he presses on heedlessly and never reproaches himself.”
