Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1604 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us, saying: I was informed by Sayyār; al-Murri narrated to us; ʿAlī b. Zayd narrated to me. He said: “Al-Hasan spent the night with us, and he passed the entire night in tears. When dawn broke I said, ‘O Abū Saʿīd, you have caused our whole household to weep tonight.’ He answered, ‘O ʿAlī, I said to myself—“O Hasan,” referring to his own soul—‘Perhaps Allah has looked upon you because of some of your failings and said: Do whatever you wish; I will accept nothing from you.’”
