1599 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Musa ibn Hilal narrated to us; Hisham, the companion of al-Dastuwaʾi, narrated from a man, from al-Hasan, who said:

A man came to al-Hasan and asked him about a legal question, and al-Hasan issued a ruling for him. The man then said, “Abu Saʿid, who is the true jurist?”

He replied, “The jurist is the one who is ascetic toward this world, longing for the Hereafter, clear-sighted in his religion, and diligent in worship—such is the jurist.”
