1596 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us; Abu ʿUbayd al-Naji informed us, saying: “We entered upon al-Hasan to visit him during his illness, and he said:

‘Welcome, welcome! May Allah keep you in peace and lodge us and you in the Abode of Peace. This—if you persevere and remain sincere—is a manifest good deed. And I swear, let not your share of this message, may Allah have mercy on you, be merely that you hear it with one ear and let it pass out the other. Whoever has seen Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—has seen a man who would set out morning and evening, who never placed one brick upon another nor one reed upon another; rather, a banner was raised before him and he hastened toward it: “Quickly, quickly! Salvation, salvation!”

So why are you still climbing so high? By the Lord of the Kaʿbah, you have already arrived, as though you and the appointed matter were face to face.’”}
