I heard al-Nuʿmān—meaning Ibn Bashīr—giving a sermon in which he said: “ʿUmar spoke about the worldly plenty people had come to enjoy and remarked: ‘I have seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spend the whole day twisting in hunger, unable to find even coarse dates with which to fill his stomach.’”
