1566 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: I found in Bishr’s notebook, written in his own hand, that he said: “I asked al-Muʿafā about a man whose brethren come to visit him while he is fasting. He would rather they not find out about his fast, yet he would like them to eat in his home. In such a case, where does the greater merit lie—should he refrain from inviting them to food?” He replied, “Feeding them is dearer to me. If he wishes, let him attend to them and say, ‘I have already eaten.’” It was then said to Sufyan, “When he says, ‘I have had lunch,’ does he mean yesterday, before this occasion?” He answered, “Yes.”
