1562 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; al-Hasan ibn ʿĪsā narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubārak informed us; Muḥammad ibn Muṭarrif informed us; Abū Ḥāzim, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Saʿīd ibn Yarbuʿ, from Mālik al-Dārī, reported that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) once took four hundred dinars, placed them in a pouch, and said to his servant, “Take this to Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrāḥ, then remain in the house for a while to see what he does.”
The servant went to Abū ʿUbaydah and said, “The Commander of the Believers says: ‘Use this for some of your needs.’” He replied, “May Allah keep him close to me and have mercy on him.” Then he said, “Come, girl! Take these seven dinars and these five to So-and-so, and these five to So-and-so,” continuing in that manner until nothing remained.
The servant returned to ʿUmar and informed him. ʿUmar had already prepared another pouch of the same amount for Muʿādh ibn Jabal, so he said, “Take this to Muʿādh ibn Jabal and stay in the house until you see what he does.”
The servant delivered it to Muʿādh, saying, “The Commander of the Believers says: ‘Use this for some of your needs.’” Muʿādh replied, “May Allah have mercy on him and keep us connected. Come, girl! Take such-and-such to the household of So-and-so.” At that point Muʿādh’s wife looked out and said, “By Allah, we are in need—give something to us!” Only two dinars were left in the bundle, so he tossed them to her.
The servant returned to ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him. ʿUmar was delighted and said, “They truly are brothers, each of them cut from the same cloth.” (may Allah be pleased with her)
