1538 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Sayyār narrated to us; Jaʿfar narrated to us; Ḥawshab narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan. He said: I asked him, “O Abū Saʿīd, a man to whom Allah has granted wealth, and from it he performs Hajj and maintains family ties—does he also have the right to luxuriate in it?”
Al-Ḥasan replied, “No. Even if the entire world were his, he would still be entitled only to what suffices him, and he should send the surplus on ahead for the day of his poverty and destitution. Those who held fast among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Successors who learned from them used to dislike accumulating estates and wealth in this life, lest they cling to them and their backs grow strong thereby. Whatever provision Allah gave them, they would take from it only what met their basic needs and forward the remainder for the day of their want and impoverishment, and then for whatever necessities might follow in matters of their religion and their worldly affairs, in what lay between them and Allah—exalted is He—.”
