1498 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar ibn Muhammad ibn Aban ibn Salih ibn ʿUmayr narrated to us; Mubarak narrated to us, from Abu ʿAbd Allah—an elder from Basra—from Malik ibn Dinar, from al-Hasan, who said:

I asked him, “What is the scholar’s punishment?” He replied, “The death of the heart.”

I asked, “And what is the death of the heart?” He answered, “To pursue the dunyā (worldly life) by means of deeds meant for the Ākhirah (the Hereafter).”
