Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1482 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Ahmad narrated to us; Yusuf ibn Yaʿqub al-Dawsi narrated to us; Hisham narrated to us; from al-Hasan, concerning the verse: “They used to sleep but little of the night” (al-Dhariyat 51:17) — “they would sleep only a short part of the night; and in the hours before dawn they sought forgiveness” (al-Dhariyat 51:18). He explained: “They would prolong the prayer until al-saḥar (the pre-dawn moments), and then they would implore their Lord in humility.”
