1459 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Ṣafwān narrated to us; Hishām narrated that he said: I heard al-Hasan say, “By Allah, I met people who—were one of them to inherit a vast sum of wealth—would still, by Allah, live in exhausting hardship. He would say to his brother, ‘My brother, I know this is inheritance and therefore ḥalāl, but I fear it may corrupt my heart and my deeds. Take it; I have no need of it.’ He would never take a single thing from it, even though, by Allah, he remained in severe toil.
I also heard al-Hasan say, ‘By Allah, I came across people who were more ascetic regarding what Allah had made lawful for them than you are regarding what He has forbidden you; and they were more anxious that their good deeds might not be accepted than you are that you might be held accountable for your misdeeds.’”
