Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1447 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; ʿAli ibn Muslim narrated to us; Sayyār narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allah ibn Shumayṭ narrated to us; my father narrated to me, saying: I heard al-Hasan say: “The believer greets the morning in grief and ends the day in grief; he goes about with unwavering certainty amid that sorrow. What suffices him is what would suffice a small she-goat: a handful of dates and a single draught of water.”
