Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿUbayd Allah ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Lāḥiq said: I heard my father report from Muslim ibn Yasār, who said:

“I arrived in al-Baḥrayn and stayed with a woman who possessed sons, wealth, and slaves. She was frequently downcast. When we were about to leave, I bade her farewell and asked, ‘Do you have any need?’ She replied, ‘Our only need is that, should you come to this town again, you lodge with us.’

“After some time I was away and then returned. When I reached the alley I found no one, and when I reached her door I found no one. I sought permission to enter and heard her laughing. I went in, and there was another woman with her. She said, ‘I can see that what you are seeing surprises you.’ I replied, ‘Indeed; I saw your door and it is deserted.’ She said, ‘Ever since you left us, whatever we sent by sea sank, and whatever we dispatched by land was ruined, and her sons died and her slaves died.’

“I asked, ‘So you were sorrowful then, yet today you are cheerful?’ She answered, ‘At that time I assumed I had no good awaiting me with my Lord—exalted is He. But when I was afflicted in my wealth and my children, hope returned to me.’

“Later I met ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar and told him the story. He said, ‘No one has overtaken the Prophet of Allah Job (peace be upon him) in this matter—except perhaps this woman, and that only by crawling! This khamiṣah of mine (cloak) split, so I sent it to Turfaʾ to be mended; when the stitching did not come back as I wished, it upset me.’”
