Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

I was also told—through al-Mubārak ibn Faḍālah, from Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl—who said:

“I entered, together with al-Ḥasan, to visit al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Ziyād al-ʿAdawī. Grief had utterly worn him out, and he had a sister who would card cotton-lint for him morning and evening. Al-Ḥasan said to him, ‘How are you, O ʿAlāʾ?’ He replied, ‘Ah, sorrow upon sorrow!’ Thereupon al-Ḥasan said, ‘Let us go. By Allah, this is grief carried to its very limit.’”
