1427 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Sayyār narrated to us; Jaʿfar narrated to us:

Hishām ibn Ziyād al-ʿAdawī, the brother of al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Ziyād, once came in to see us. Mālik ibn Dīnār said to him, “Tell them a report about your brother.” He replied, “Certainly. My brother al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Ziyād used to spend every Thursday night in prayer. One night he came home and said to his wife Asmāʾ, ‘O Asmāʾ, tonight I feel some sluggishness. When such-and-such portion of the night has passed, wake me up.’

“When the appointed time came he awoke in alarm and said, ‘Someone visited me, seized me by the front of my head, and said: “O son of Ziyād, rise and remember Allah—Exalted is He—so that He will remember you.”’”

Hishām added, “By Allah, those hairs at the front of his face never stopped standing upright for as long as he lived in this world and even after his death. When we washed his body they were still erect and had not lain down.”
