1406 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Abu ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadi narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Thābit—meaning al-Bunānī—from Anas:
Abu Ṭalḥah al-Anṣārī once recited Sūrah al-Tawbah, and when he came to the verse, “Go forth, whether light or heavy” (Sūrah al-Tawbah 9:41), he said, “I see that our Lord—exalted is He—is summoning us, elders and youth alike. Equip me, O my sons!”
They replied, “May Allah have mercy on you. You campaigned alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he passed away, and with Abu Bakr until he passed away, and with ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him. We will go forth in your place.”
But he refused, so they prepared his equipment for him. He set sail, and there he died. They found no island on which to bury him until seven days had passed, yet his body showed no change; then they found an island and buried him there.
