Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1400 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Hārūn ibn Maʿrūf narrated to us; Damrah narrated to us, from Khālid Abū Yazīd, from Muʿāwiya ibn Qurrah, who said:

I once went in to see Muslim ibn Yasār while I was burying part of my own body. Muʿāwiya added: He used to lengthen his prostration—I think he said—so blood reached his two front teeth and they fell out, and I buried them. I then said, “I possess no great store of deeds; all I do is place my hope in Allah—may He be Exalted—and fear Him.” At that he raised his head toward me, startled, and asked, “What did you just say?” I repeated, “I have no significant deeds except that I hope in Allah—may He be Exalted—and fear Him.” He replied, “What Allah wills, what Allah wills! Whoever is afraid of something keeps away from it, and whoever hopes for something pursues it. How can a servant claim to fear Allah when a desire comes to him and he does not abandon it out of fear, or claim to hope in Allah when he is tested with an affliction and does not endure it because of what he hopes for?” Muʿāwiya added: At that moment I realized I had just commended myself without even noticing.
