- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Bahz ibn Asad narrated to us; Jaʿfar ibn Sulayman narrated to us; Thabit reported:
“ʿAbd Allah ibn Mutarrif passed away, and he had so renounced the worldly life that when he was later put in charge of something, Mutarrif went out to his people wearing fine clothes and having applied oil. They grew angry and said, ‘ʿAbd Allah dies, and yet you come out in clothes like these, scented!’
Mutarrif replied, ‘Should I abase myself because of it? My Lord—exalted is He—has promised me in this matter three qualities, each one dearer to me than the whole world. Allah, exalted is He, says:
“Those who, when calamity strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we will return’; upon such people are blessings from their Lord and mercy, and it is they who are rightly guided.” [al-Baqarah: 157]
⦗199⦘ So after this, shall I humble myself for it?’
Thabit added: Mutarrif also said, ‘There is nothing I am given in the Hereafter—even if it were only the measure of a jug of water—without my wishing that it had been taken from me in this world.’"
١٣٧١ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزُ بْنُ أَسَدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ قَالَ: مَاتَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُطَرِّفٍ، وَكَانَ قَدْ زَهِدَ فِي الدُّنْيَا حَتَّى اسْتُعْمِلَ فَخَرَجَ مُطَرِّفٌ عَلَى قَوْمِهِ فِي ثِيَابٍ حَسَنَةٍ وَقَدِ ادَّهَنَ فَغَضِبُوا، قَالُوا: يَمُوتُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ يَخْرُجُ فِي ثِيَابٍ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ مُدَّهِنًا، قَالَ مُطَرِّفٌ: " فَأَسْتَكِينُ لَهَا، وَقَد وَعَدَنِي رَبِّي (تعالى) عَلَيْهَا ثَلَاثَ خِصَالٍ كُلُّ خَصْلَةٍ مِنْهَا أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا كُلِّهَا، قَالَ اللَّهُ – Exalté soit-Il –: ﴿الَّذِينَ إِذَا أَصَابَتْهُمْ مُصِيبَةٌ قَالُوا إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ أُولَئِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَلَوَاتٌ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ وَرَحْمَةٌ وَأُولَئِكَ هُمْ الْمُهْتَدُونَ﴾ [البقرة: ١٥٧] ، ⦗١٩٩⦘ فَأَسْتَكِينُ لَهَا بَعْدَ هَذَا، قَالَ ثَابِتٌ: وَقَالَ مُطَرِّفٌ: مَا شَيْءٌ أَعْطَيْتُهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ قَدْرَ كُوزٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ إِلَّا وَدِدْتُ أَنَّهُ أُخِذَ مِنِّي فِي الدُّنْيَا "
