Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; ʿAli ibn Muslim related to me; Sayyār related to us; Ḥammād ibn Zayd related; ʿAli ibn Zayd, from Muṭarrif, who used to say:

When the verse, “And indeed, your Lord is full of forgiveness for mankind despite their wrongdoing” (Qur’an 13:6), was recited to him, he would comment: “If people truly grasped the vastness of Allah’s forgiveness, mercy, and forbearance, their eyes would be cooled with rest. But if they understood the severity of Allah’s punishment, His retribution, His might, and His vengeance, their tears would never cease, and they would find no enjoyment in food or drink.”
