Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muhammad ibn ʿAbbad al-Makki narrated to us; Sufyan narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn ʿAmir, who said: Muttarrif said:

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of the ruler and from the evil of whatever their pens decree. I seek refuge in You lest I utter a word of obedience to You, seeking thereby Your good pleasure, yet pursue in it anything other than Your Face. I seek refuge in You from managing any part of my affairs in a way that would disgrace me before You. I seek refuge in You lest someone attain felicity through what You have taught me while I myself remain deprived. I seek refuge in You from becoming a cautionary example for others, and I seek refuge in You from resorting to any act of disobedience to You in order to ward off a harm that has befallen me.”
